Because Daylilies are so very adaptable, they will grow virtually anywhere in Australia. They will withstand drought for a short period and will also grow in boggy ground - as well as the average home garden. Most varieties are best grown in full sun to semi-sun.

Plant the crown of the plant (where the leaves meet the roots) at soil level and separate plants an average of 60-80 cm apart in well-worked soil which has been enriched with manure and compost. Two tablespoons of a slow-release fertiliser at planting time (per plant) is also highly beneficial and will ensure early and healthy blom. Daylilies will also respond well of regular foliar feeding. Remember to water newly-divided or newly-acquired plants until new growth appears. After that just give them good garden care for great results.

You can divide clumps every 3-4 years so that you maintain optimum flower size, quality and quantity. You can divide established clumps at any time to the year, but early autumn is the optimum time. Flowering time is generally mid-November to June in our temperate Sydney garden. In frosty areas, bloom may cease in early autumn. Remember that some daylilies are autumn re-bloomers.

Snails and slugs don't usually touch the Daylily flowers, but they can effect the leaves. Apids and Mites can be controlled with systemic or organic sprays - and this is especially important in hot, dry weather.

We have a range of predominantly small-flowered varieties. Our range of large-flowered varieties are on a separate page. Daylilies can be either evergreen, semi-evergreen or dormant in nature. On the whole we sell evergreen and semi-evergreen varieties.

Our growing fields remain free from Daylily rust. We only source new varieites from other Daylily-rust-free establishments, so you can purchase plants from us with confidence.

EXPLANATION OF TERMS

The following terms are used in describing the varieties of Daylilies that we have available. Please check them prior to you making your final variety decision:

VE - Very Early season blooming
E - Early season blooming
M - Mid season blooming
L - Late season blooming
RE - can re-bloom in early autumn
Ev - Evergreen variety. This type keep their leaves all year round.
Semi Ev - Semi-Evergreen variety. This type will usually keep some of its leaves all year, but can die down considerably in the cooler months in our garden in Sydney. Newer, fresh foliage re-appears in early spring.
Dor - Dormant variety. This type will die right down during winter and the cooler months, which makes these particularly useful in cooler garden locations. New, fresh foliage will re-appear in early spring.
Dip - Diploid variety
Tet- Tetraploid variety. This is a variety which has had its naturally-occuring Diploid number of chromosones doubled, usually via chemical treatment. Tetraploid varieties can have larger flowers than the Diploid cultivars. You only need to be aware of the 'ploidy' of varieties if you are purchasing stock to do some hybridising as Diploid and Tetraploid cultivars will not hybridise together. Tetraploids will only cross with other Tetraploids and Diploids will only cross with other Diploids.

We have chosen to separate the Daylilies which we have listed for sale into two separate categories - according to flower size. In some cases the plants and scape height are similar to large varieties, but the flower size is smaller. Please check the height of the variety as well as the flower size category where we have it listed on this website, when you are making your final choices.

Generally speaking, small-flowered varieties have flowers that are usually no larger than 4 inches (10 cm) in diameter. The miniature varieties, which have smaller flowers on shorter scapes are usually no larger than 3 inches (8 cm) in diameter.

Large-flowered varieties usually have flowers that are larger than 5 inches (12 cm) in diameter - and also have correspondingly taller scapes.

All of the height, bloom sequence time, flower sizes etc. noted above are based upon how the particular cultivars grow for US in OUR garden in Sydney. The actual bloom sequence and/or scape height may vary slightly if you live in a slightly cooler or slightly warmer location to us.
